Placed at the heart of the city of Jamshedpur in the state of Jharkhand, Jamshedpur women’s college caters to the female population, carving a niche of widely ranging courses allowing the female students to be educationally sound and exceptional in terms of personality. The most prestigious college of Steel City, it was established in the year 1953 and is affiliated to Kolhan University, Chaibasa. Even as the college set on a sort of evolution from a privatized institute to an affiliated body in the year 1960 and ultimately into a constituent unit of Ranchi University on 1st April 1977, the college maintained its focus on the goal of effecting quality education to its students.
Jamshedpur Women’s College adorns a prominent history that it is, with obvious implications, proud of. Not only has it experienced a commendable growth spectacularly appreciable, but also the hoary past serves as reminiscences of moments that shall forever be cherished by every individual associated with the college. It hosted the Queen of Iran, Shah Bano, in 1962 and 1964; Acharya Vinoba Bhave came to the College when Late Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri summoned Acharya before his departure for Tashkent. Shakuntala Devi, the maths wizard, among other dignitaries, have visited college. Jamshedpur Women’s College is a testament to the enlightening vision of its founder, Mrs Perin C. Mehta, who toiled to give a new light to the destiny of the women of Jamshedpur with the trailblazing initiative of setting up a college for women in the steel city. The college has also been honoured with a University Grants Commission conferred status of a Centre with Potential for Excellence and is Graded A by NAAC.
The college offers a broad spectrum of undergraduate degrees in the field of arts, science and commerce with departments of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, botany, zoology, Bengali, Hindi, English, history, Oriya, Urdu, Sanskrit, home science, political science, economics, philosophy, psychology, music, education and commerce. It also offers scholarship on merit basis and even to those who belong to the lower sections of the society. Legal aid assistance is available within the campus itself for students who need guidance.
Not compromising in the domain of co-curricular activities, the college has its own sports complex where students can participate in badminton, kho-kho or kabaddi under the expert guidance of trained coaches and teachers which has allowed the college students to contest in many of the states and nationally organized sport games which testify to the freedom brought on by the college for the women of Jharkhand. The unit of NSS works towards organizing and managing several socially inclined volunteer work aimed at instilling a holistic approach in life. The NCC wing exists for women to indulge in cadet training.
