Scope of Psychology in India

Psychology holds out a lot of promise and hope because it is the rational means to give us a sure guide to understanding human behavior. It is the science of human and animal behavior Psychologists study the development of individuals and how humans interact with each other. They use observation, experimentation and other methods like surveys to assess the various cognitive aspects of human personality. There should not be any confusion in our minds about a psychiatrist and a psychologist. The psychiatrists are medically qualified to treat patients with mental illness which may involve the prescription of drugs whereas psychologists are concerned with offering drug-free psychotherapy and guidance as well.

There is tremendous potential in psychology as a career since psychologists apply their knowledge and techniques to a wide range of services including human/social services, management, education, law, and sports. The primary jobs all stem from a specialized academic study, observations and practical cases. Psychologists usually take up jobs in teaching, clinical practice, Administration, Basic research, applied research, clinical research, etc. In addition to a variety of settings, psychologists specialize in many different areas. Clinical Psychologists find work in hospitals, community health centers,  schools, and colleges, in research institutions, in teaching, in consulting, mental disability diagnosis and rehabilitation center, etc. Counseling Psychologists deal with the emotional and personal problems of the client.

A psychologist who works in counseling, psychotherapy, clinical practice, counseling practice needs to have certain personal attributes for the job. The person must have good communication skills such that they listen first patiently and then draw out responses with facts. The mannerisms of the person must give a reflection of confidence. The person must be empathetic towards the patient and the family but this has to be maintained just up to the stage of gathering information and case material. Must have an ability to analyze situations and cases objectively and the most important of all, the person must exhibit the quality of keeping patients at all times. Since the field of psychology is people-oriented each psychologist must be comfortable dealing with people. Whether pure research or application, teaching, counseling, consulting or psychotherapy a psychologist must be very careful about interpretation and analysis keeping in mind all the variables governing human behavior. With a detached interest in individuals and communities’ behavior rather than personal involvement, an interest in the scientific method, patience, education-training, a warm and easy manner, you will find satisfaction, fulfillment, and success as a psychologist.

Training to be a psychologist requires early planning. One must take up Psychology as a subject at the plus-two level which is the first stage of when this subject is offered to study. Without taking up this subject at this level you might find it difficult to choose this for your graduation. After plus two you can take up psychology as a major or an honors subject. In Universities where there is no provision for majoring (Honors), you maintain it as one of the subjects. Then after graduation, you have to continue for the master’s degree in Psychology. At this stage, the University you choose becomes important for the specialization you are seeking. All University’s Master’s programs do not offer every specialization. Then you might have to explore further or go for an additional Diploma for the betterment of your skills.
